THE CONCEPT OF XIN YI IN TAIJI QUAN

The concept of Xin Yi, the two minds, one the “wisdom mind” Yi and the other “monkey mind” Xin is central to most Chinese martial arts. Including the Xin Yi related and family of martial arts who have either both concepts, indicating that it is a fundamental concept of those particularly those Xin Yi styles. Like the concept of Taiji in Taiji Quan.

In fighting or daily life, if you can control your mind and conquer yourself, you should not then be perturbed by the challenges that occur in your life. Nevertheless, this is easy said than done.

Xin and Yi represents yin and yang in Taiji Quan, ultimately it comes to being able to recognise what is yin and what is yang. Understand this and harmonise those two aspects. For example, your physical movements with the form. On a mental or internal level that would include, the mind, and the emotions. The Xin and Yi are harmonised with the Yi in control.

How is this done?

One must sink, release the tension and this allows the mind to be calm and not be perturbed by the emotions, the monkey mind. With the body more settled and freer from tension, one can move easily and issue power more efficiently and the mind can be controlled. This control indicates the unity of the body and the mind.

When you release the tension from sinking, this allows the mind to be calm and not be perturbed by emotions. With the body more settled and freer from tension, one can move easily and issue power more efficiently and the mind can be controlled. This control indicates the unity of the body and the mind.

One seeks to achieve this balance through practice, to understand this, you must train. Training is your reflection. Not intellectualising it or reading the many classics that there is. It is there that you see that although Taiji Quan is a martial art and has history combat. It becomes more than that, like most Chinese martial art. There is a holistic approach to strengthen your two main tools the body and the mind. The two intertwine and are not separate entities.
