Peng Jin: How Do I USE it?

Peng Jin: How Do I USE it?

I am in no way an expert and the reason for this post is to share my experience. And to connect with like minded practitioners of martial arts whether in Tai Chi or not.

A peng structure is the main principle from which the eight jins arise.

And the peng jin is the reactionary force birthed from the release of excess tension in the body under the guidance of the mind.

The quality of you how can apply this principle will depend on your level and certain fundamental prerequisites. Such as your level of ting jin– “listening energy.”

Nonetheless regardless, if you are a complete beginner this may inspire you or at least give you an idea.

But if you observe the video below, you will notice that the peng jin arises from me “sinking” and when the training partner launches a punch. The idea is to sink as I deflect, where I absorb my training partner’s pressure. Seizing him in the process and in that moment the rising jin-peng jin. Rises from my feet all the way to my hands.

And in this process my training partner is “uprooted.” The key points are sinking and the opening of the body. Peng jin will be dependent on your “peng structure” or quality of peng. Its applications are endless and its not the technique that matters but the principle.

For one to understand, one must practice.

Standing exercises like Zhan Zhuang and form practice, improve your quality of peng and it is the quality of your peng structure that will determine how well you can uproot an opponent.

For me, the more I practice the more I understand I need to practice some more.
